CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

"Look at this!" Caitlin dug in her jacket pocket, taking out one of the evidence bags she kept there for emergencies just like this.

"It's definitely something that's been dropped there recently," Nathan said as she wrapped the bag around her hand and bent down.

"It's a key," she said, closing her hand around it and then carefully inverting it so the key was in the bag. And as her mind worked further, she realized why it was there. "It's from the padlock," she said, now feeling more disappointed than hopeful. "Of course. He must lock the padlock up once the chains are secured and then throw away the key."

"Still might mean he touched it," Nathan said. "It might hold a print."

"There have been no prints on anything so far," she said, but Nathan shook his head.

"There have been no other keys found at the scenes either," he pointed out. "Caitlin, I think he dropped it without meaning to. And it might hold important evidence. Let's take it in and get it fingerprinted. We can drop it off at the forensic lab right away. They'll be open if they’re at the police station premises, which I’m sure I remember reading." Nathan pointed out.

"Okay," Caitlin agreed. She was feeling better now. She was feeling as if there might just be some hope on the horizon. "Let's take it in."

"And then, let's get back to work and look again at all three of these victims," Nathan said. "I know businesses are all closed now, and it’s close to midnight, but if we research their names, their histories, there's surely a chance we might find that common factor we need tonight?"

Now, Nathan was the one to be boosting her morale, and Caitlin felt grateful for it. This case was forcing them to follow the workings of a cold and brutal mind, and she thought that confronting this, more than anything, was wearing them down.

They headed back to the car, and Caitlin got on the radio, explaining what they'd found and asking for coordinates of the forensic lab. Those were radioed through in a moment, and she started up and began the long drive back through the darkness.

As Nathan had correctly recalled, it was based in one of the larger police stations, and so it would be open to receive evidence.

But as she drove back into town, she realized that not much else was open. It was dark and quiet, and almost all the restaurants were closed. One or two bars were still open, with their lights and music providing flashes of activity that broke the quiet stillness.

And there, ahead of them and diagonally opposite the police station, was a late-night convenience store that still had its doors open.

"I'm going to go in there and get us some food," Nathan decided. "And then, once you've got the key checked in, we should really look for a place to sleep."

"Sleep?" Caitlin hadn't even thought about that, exhausted as she was. But Nathan was nodding insistently.

"We can do our research easily in a motel room.
